Andrew Brookes, Defence and Aerospace Analyst, International Institute of Strategic Studies
Space Based Radar Technologies For Answering The Changing Needs Of Defence And Security
The changing face of global defence and security brings with it the need to be able to respond in very short timescales both in the intelligence area as as well as forces on the ground. Such responses can be achieved for many aspects from space-based sources in a number of ways:
•Immediate surge capacity from existing in orbit systems
•Rapid launch of specific additional surveillance assets
•Longer-term capability reconfiguration
This paper will address the following issues in terms of the ability of space based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to provide operational responsiveness:
•SAR applications for defence and security
•Modular microwave payloads
•Small satellite design for rapid integration and test
•Delivering battlefield information to the war fighter in near real time
